Horticulture (Garden Maintenance) Foreman

Job Duties: 

  • Responsible for managing small landscaping projects
  • Training & delegating tasks to a crew of 2-6
  • Survey and assess designated projects and jobsites
  • Responsible for constructing and maintaining gardens
  • Plan job in an effective manner to ensure optimum job efficiency and effectiveness
  • Use and operate tools and equipment used in horticulture
  • Plant seeds and transplant seedlings
  • Tree, shrub, and plant examination and treatment
  • Care for growing plants by watering, pruning, weeding, cultivating, and removing dead or damaged leaf tissue
  • Inspect, handle, and transport nursery stock
  • Spread top soil and lay sod
  • Plant fertilization and watering
  • Prune trees, shrubs, and hedges
  • General lawn and garden maintenance
  • Operate power mowers, push mowers, tractors, snow blowers, electric clippers, pruning saws and other landscape maintenance equipment
  • Perform other manual duties to clean and maintain landscaped environments , shop + equipment
  • Assist with landscape constructions when needed
  • Complete daily paperwork tracking job time and material costs
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Comply with all company policies and regulations
  • Work in accordance with all local health and safety laws and regulations
  • Communicate with customers in a polite and courteous manner 

Requirements: 

  • Completion of college, vocational, or technical training preferred
  • Horticulturist Trade Certification or Lawn Gardener Trade Certification a plus
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience
  • Plant knowledge and identification, specifically trees, shrubs, and perennials
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications
  • Physically fit with strong stamina
  • Basic measurement and calculation skills
  • Ability to follow safe working procedures
  • Excellent observation skills and a strong attention to detail
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision, and as part of a team
  • Speak, read, and write English
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Computer skills an asset 

Work Conditions: 

  • Job requires ability to work with hand tools, small engine equipment, and materials
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. repeatedly through an entire work shift
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Requires good manual dexterity
  • Excellent stamina is required
  • Work near heavy equipment and other vehicles on a regular basis
  • Work outdoors in various conditions including heat and humidity, rain, dust, noise, and cold
  • Flexible working hours including occasional weekend work
